Child seats and family transfers in Bosnia

Families are a large part of who we drive, and the question that arrives most often before the booking is some version of “do you have a car seat, and will it be the right one”. Yes, and here is how it works, starting with what the law requires.

What the law says

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s traffic law requires children under five to be carried in a child restraint system suited to their weight and fitted according to the manufacturer’s instructions, in the rear seat. From five to twelve a booster seat that lets the child use the normal seat belt is required, again in the back. Children under twelve may not ride in the front seat; the one exception is an infant under two in a rear-facing seat with the front airbag switched off. Fines for a child in the front or a child without a seat run from several hundred marks upward.

The practical reading for a family transfer is simple: every child under twelve gets a seat of the right size, in the back, and the front seat is for an adult. That is how we run every booking, whether or not anyone asks.

What we carry

Three types, all provided free:

• Infant seat, rear-facing, for babies up to roughly a year or the weight limit on the seat.
• Toddler seat, forward-facing with its own harness, for roughly one to four years.
• Booster, for children from about five who are big enough for the car’s own belt.

Tell us the age and approximate weight at booking and the right seat is fitted before the driver leaves. If you travel with your own seat, that is fine too; the driver will help fit it. If you land with an infant and forgot to mention it, message us as soon as you can; we will do our best, but a seat fitted in the arrivals car park is not the same as one fitted before departure.

How many fit

A child seat takes a full seat. A sedan carries three passengers, so two child seats plus one adult is a full sedan, and one child seat plus two adults is the more common family-of-three shape. A family of four, or any family with a stroller and full luggage, travels by minivan, which takes seven passengers and has the space for the seats, the bags and the stroller without anyone holding anything for two hours. Where children make the route decision

Airport arrivals. The driver meets you in the arrivals hall with the seat already in the car. With an infant, the airport to city transfer is about 20 minutes; it is the easiest first drive of any trip.

Sarajevo to Mostar. Two hours and a quarter with an optional stop at Konjic or Jablanica, which is where families tend to want the break. The Sarajevo to Mostar page has the stops.

Sarajevo to the coast. Four and a half hours plus a border. For children this is the drive where the stops earn their place: Mostar for lunch, Kravica for a swim in summer. The Sarajevo to Dubrovnik route is the one most families book with all three.

Mountains in winter. Seats go in the same way; the only extra is the ski gear, which is free, and a minivan for four or more.

Frequently asked questions

Do you charge for child seats? No. Infant, toddler and booster seats are free on every transfer.

Do I need to bring my own seat from home? No. Ours are fitted before pickup. Bring yours if you prefer it; the driver helps fit it.

Can my child sit in the front? Not under twelve, by law. The exception for infants under two rear-facing with the airbag off is legal but not something we recommend on a long drive; the back is safer.

Does an infant count as a passenger? Yes, because the seat takes a place. Two adults and a baby is three passengers, which is a full sedan.

Can we stop to feed or change the baby? Any time. Tell the driver; there is no charge for a short stop on any route.

What about a family of five? Minivan, with the seats fitted in the middle row and the bags behind. Tell us the ages and we set it up.
