ARK D-0 — full name Armijska Ratna Komanda D-0 — is the Cold War-era underground nuclear bunker built between 1953 and 1979 for Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito and the senior Yugoslav military command. It sits buried inside a mountain near the town of Konjic, about 60 kilometres south of Sarajevo on the Sarajevo-Mostar route. Today the bunker functions as a museum and contemporary art biennial venue.
As a transfer destination, ARK D-0 is a niche but high-engagement stop. Most of our bunker bookings are guests who already booked a Sarajevo-to-Mostar transfer and want to add Konjic and the bunker as an extended stop, or guests doing Sarajevo-to-Konjic as a half-day round trip. The visit itself is a 90-minute guided tour, group only — no walk-up access.

Where the road actually goes
The bunker is located in Ljuta, a small village about 4 kilometres from central Konjic. From Sarajevo via the M-17 highway, the drive is around 60 kilometres and 50 minutes to an hour. From Mostar via the M-17 (Konjic is on the Mostar-Sarajevo route), the drive is around 70 kilometres and 1 hour 10 minutes.
The road to Ljuta from Konjic itself is a paved local road, two-lane, in good condition. The final approach to the bunker entrance is a short stretch of military service road through a checkpoint — the bunker remains a registered military compound, which is why guided-tour-only access applies.
The bunker complex is not visible from the public road. The entrance is set into the mountain, with parking for visitors at the surface entry point. Your driver parks here while you do the tour; no public transport reaches this exact spot, so a private transfer or organised tour is realistically the only access option.
Parking, dropoff, waiting
Tour booking is separate from the transfer. Tours run three times daily at 09:00, 12:00, and 15:00 (90 minutes each). Bookings must be made at least 24 hours in advance through the operator (RaftKor in Konjic, or via visitkonjic.com). The tour fee is €20 per person; under-12s are free. Tickets must be collected at the operator's Konjic office at least 30 minutes before tour time — we factor that pickup into the schedule.
The standard pattern we run: pickup in Sarajevo at 07:30 for the 09:00 tour, or 11:00 for the 12:00 tour, or 13:30 for the 15:00 tour. The 12:00 tour is usually the best fit because it leaves time for either lunch in Konjic before or a Mostar onward leg afterward. From Mostar, the morning transfer for the 12:00 tour starts around 09:30.
Driver waits at the surface entry parking during the 90-minute tour. Luggage stays in the vehicle. Photography rules inside vary by section of the bunker (some areas allow it, some do not — the guide explains as you go), but that is between you and the tour.
After the tour, options are: lunch in Konjic (the Stara Carsija old town has decent grilled-meat places, 15-minute drive from the bunker), continue to Mostar (50 minutes onward), or return to Sarajevo (1 hour onward).
When to plan for this stop
The bunker tours run year-round — the underground temperature is constant regardless of season. Winter snow in Konjic is unusual to disrupt the road; the M-17 is the main BiH north-south route and gets priority maintenance.
The 09:00 tour is the quietest in summer (smaller groups, fewer day-trippers from Mostar/Sarajevo who skew toward 12:00 and 15:00). Off-peak season (November through March) sees lighter traffic on all three time slots.
Group tours of 15 or more can request custom timing between 09:00 and 17:00 — useful for organised history-tour groups who want flexibility. Tell us at booking if you have a larger group; we coordinate with the bunker operator on your behalf.
