Mostar to Sarajevo for a flight: train or transfer?

The northbound version of the Neretva corridor has one question attached to it more often than any other: “we fly out of Sarajevo that afternoon, is the train safe?” The honest answer depends on the flight time, the amount of luggage, and how you feel about a connection in a city you are only passing through. Here is how the three ways of doing it line up against a departure board.

The morning train, minute by minute

Railways of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina run two Talgo services north each day. Train 720 leaves Mostar at about 06:33 and arrives at Sarajevo railway station at 08:35. Train 722 leaves at about 17:09 and arrives at 19:07. There is nothing in between, and on this route “about” matters: the published times are for Čapljina, the line’s start, and the Mostar stop is a few minutes down the line, so check the board the day before.

Assume the 06:33. You are at Mostar station, a 15 to 20 minute walk from Stari Most with your bags, by 06:15. You arrive in Sarajevo at 08:35. The station has no left luggage, no bureau de change and no direct connection to the airport; the airport is roughly 12 kilometres away, about 20 minutes by car, and the airport bus is routed for the city centre rather than the stations. Realistically you are at the terminal between 09:15 and 09:30.

For a flight at 12:00 or later that is comfortable. For an 11:00 departure it is tight but workable if the train runs to time. For anything earlier, the morning train cannot get you there, and the evening train is only useful for a night flight or an overnight in Sarajevo.

The train has no seat reservations, so an early summer departure with luggage may mean standing for part of the two hours. Tickets are sold online at zfbh.ba for collection at the station, or at the counter.

The bus: more departures, more connections

Buses from Mostar to Sarajevo run through the day, roughly hourly, with Centrotrans, Autoprevoz and Globtour among the operators. Mostar has two bus stations, the main one next to the railway station and the East station near the Carinski bridge, so check which one your operator leaves from. The ride is 2.5 to 3 hours with stops in Jablanica and Konjic, and a ticket is 16 to 35 KM. Hold luggage is one bag free on Centrotrans and a small charge per extra bag; other operators charge a little per bag.

You arrive at Sarajevo bus station, on the same block as the railway station, and face the same 20 minute hop to the airport with your bags. The advantage over the train is choice of departure time; the cost is an extra half hour to an hour on the road and the same connection at the end. Plan the bus that arrives three hours before an international departure, then look at what time that means leaving Mostar. It is usually earlier than people expect.

The transfer: one vehicle, scheduled backwards

A private transfer starts at your Mostar accommodation, or at the nearest vehicle-accessible point if you are inside the pedestrian old town (usually the Hotel Eden turnaround, the Hotel Bristol lay-by or the Spanish Square car park, all a one to three minute walk from Stari Most), and drives straight to the SJJ terminal. Direct, it is 2 hours 15 minutes; the airport sits on the southwest edge of Sarajevo, so on this direction of travel it is reached slightly before the city.

The thing that actually matters is how the pickup time is set. Give us the flight number at booking and we schedule backwards from your check-in using the slow end of the drive-time range, about 2 hours 45 minutes, plus the standard airport buffer, rather than the best-case time. Luggage goes into the boot at the door and comes out at departures. The fare is per vehicle, from €160 for up to three passengers with three suitcases; four to seven people move to a minivan.

This is the option for early flights, for families, for anyone with more than a backpack, and for anyone who would rather not spend the last morning of a holiday doing a station-to-airport transfer in a city they have already left.

Two departures and a flight: what fits

Flight after 13:00. The 06:33 train is a genuine option. Arrive 08:35, car to the airport, at the terminal by 09:30 with time to spare. Light luggage only.

Flight between 10:00 and 13:00. The bus can work if you take one of the earliest departures and accept the connection; a transfer is calmer.

Flight before 10:00. Neither the train nor a bus gets you there. A transfer leaving Mostar around 05:00 does, or stay the last night in Sarajevo, which is what most guests with a dawn departure end up doing.

Evening flight. The 17:09 train arrives at 19:07, too late for anything but a very late departure. A mid-morning bus or a transfer timed to check-in gives you the day in Mostar and the flight in the evening.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a train or bus directly to Sarajevo Airport? No train. An airport bus links the terminal with the city centre; from the railway or bus station the practical link with luggage is a car, about 20 minutes.

Can the transfer stop in Konjic or Jablanica on the way to a flight? Yes, if the timing allows. Each stop adds about 30 minutes. With a flight at the end we will tell you honestly whether it fits; for a morning departure it usually does not.

Do I need a passport between Mostar and Sarajevo? No. Both cities are in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the whole M-17 route stays inside the Federation entity. Your passport comes out at the airport, not on the road.

What if my flight is delayed or cancelled? If you have booked a transfer we track the flight, and a change in departure time is a WhatsApp message, not a problem. If you are on the train or bus, the timetable does not move.
