Travnik & Jajce
Full day (8-10 hours) · ~320 km round trip · From €325
This day trip takes you through the historical heartland of central Bosnia to two remarkable towns that rarely appear on mainstream tourist itineraries. Travnik was the seat of Ottoman viziers for 150 years, and Jajce served as the medieval capital of the Bosnian kingdom. Together they offer a deep dive into Bosnia's layered history, from medieval fortresses to Ottoman mosques to Habsburg-era architecture.
The drive from Sarajevo heads northwest through the Lasva valley, arriving in Travnik within 90 minutes. Here you will explore the imposing hilltop fortress, wander through the colourful old town with its painted mosques, and visit the crystal-clear Plava Voda (Blue Water) spring where locals gather for fresh trout and Bosnian coffee. Travnik is also the birthplace of Nobel Prize-winning author Ivo Andric.
From Travnik, the road continues to Jajce, one of Bosnia's most visually dramatic towns. The 17-metre Pliva Waterfall cascades directly in the town centre where the Pliva river meets the Vrbas, a sight unlike anything else in Europe. Above the falls, the medieval fortress and catacombs tell the story of the last Bosnian kings. Nearby, the wooden Pliva watermills sit on a series of small lakes, one of the most photographed scenes in the country.

Frequently asked questions
Can we add a stop at the Pliva watermills?
The Pliva watermills are a standard part of the Jajce visit. They are located just 4 km from the town centre on a small lake. Your driver will take you there as part of the Jajce stop.
Is this trip suitable in winter?
Yes. Travnik and Jajce are beautiful in every season. In winter, the Jajce waterfall can partially freeze, creating a spectacular ice formation. The fortress in Travnik offers views of snow-covered mountains. Roads are well-maintained year-round.
Where is the best place to eat?
Plava Voda in Travnik is the most atmospheric lunch spot — riverside restaurants serve fresh grilled trout and traditional Bosnian dishes. In Jajce, several restaurants near the waterfall offer good local food. Your driver will recommend the best options.
Can we stop at Malak Farma?
Yes. Malak Farma in Kakanj is a popular family stop on the way to Travnik. It is a small farm with animals, a playground, and a halal restaurant. Adding this stop adds about 30 minutes to the trip at no extra charge.
How does this trip compare to the Mostar trip?
The Mostar trip is more popular with first-time visitors and offers Mediterranean-style scenery. The Travnik-Jajce trip is better for those interested in history and nature, and feels more off-the-beaten-path. Both are equally rewarding.
