Visegrad & Drina Valley

Full day (8-10 hours) · ~260 km round trip · From €265

The Visegrad day trip takes you east from Sarajevo into the dramatic Drina river valley, home to one of the most important Ottoman monuments in the Balkans. The Mehmed Pasa Sokolovic Bridge, built in 1577 and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, is the centrepiece of Ivo Andric's Nobel Prize-winning novel "The Bridge on the Drina" and remains one of the finest examples of Ottoman engineering in existence.

The drive from Sarajevo follows mountain roads through eastern Bosnia, passing through forests, gorges, and small villages that feel worlds apart from the capital. The landscape is wild and unspoiled, with the Drina river appearing in ever more spectacular fashion as you approach Visegrad. The emerald-green colour of the river against the limestone cliffs is one of Bosnia's most striking natural sights.

In Visegrad, you will walk across the 11-arch bridge that has stood for nearly 450 years, visit Andricgrad — a purpose-built town of Ottoman and Renaissance architecture created by filmmaker Emir Kusturica — and explore the riverside promenade. The town is small enough to see in a few hours but rich enough in atmosphere to leave a lasting impression. For those interested in literature, history, or architecture, this is one of the most rewarding day trips from Sarajevo.

Frequently asked questions

What is Andricgrad?

Andricgrad (also called Kamengard or Stone Town) is a cultural complex built by Serbian filmmaker Emir Kusturica. It features Ottoman and Renaissance-style stone buildings housing galleries, a cinema, restaurants, and a theatre. The architecture is deliberately eclectic and cinematic. Admission to the complex is free; individual venues may charge separately.

Can we continue to Mokra Gora or Drvengrad in Serbia?

Yes, this is possible if you have the necessary documents for a Serbia border crossing. Mokra Gora and Kusturica's Drvengrad (Mecavnik) are about 45 minutes from Visegrad across the border. This adds 2-3 hours to the trip. Let us know when booking so we can plan accordingly.

Is the road to Visegrad in good condition?

Yes. The road from Sarajevo to Visegrad is a well-maintained two-lane highway through mountain terrain. It is scenic but winding in places. The total drive time is about 2-2.5 hours each way.

Is Visegrad worth a full day trip?

Visegrad itself takes 3-4 hours to explore thoroughly. Combined with the scenic drive through the Drina valley and stops at viewpoints along the way, it fills a full day comfortably. The journey is as memorable as the destination.

Can we stop at Mokra Gora railway?

The Sargan Eight narrow-gauge railway (Sarganska Osmica) is in Mokra Gora, Serbia, about 45 minutes from Visegrad. If crossing into Serbia is possible for you, this is a wonderful addition. The railway runs scenic trips through mountain loops. Check seasonal schedules in advance.
