About this route

Sarajevo to Zabljak transfer

The journey from Sarajevo to Zabljak takes you to one of the most dramatic natural landscapes in all of Europe. Zabljak is the gateway to Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site of glacial lakes, dense pine forests, and jagged limestone peaks rising above 2,500 metres. But it is the Tara River Canyon — at 1,300 metres deep, the deepest canyon in Europe and second in the world after the Grand Canyon — that leaves the most lasting impression.

The star attraction en route is the Djurdjevica Tara Bridge, a soaring concrete arch that spans the canyon at 172 metres above the river. Built in 1940 and partially destroyed during WWII to halt an enemy advance, the bridge was rebuilt after the war and remains one of the most photographed structures in the Balkans. Your driver stops here for photos and the vertigo-inducing views down to the turquoise Tara River below.

Zabljak itself is a small, unpretentious mountain town that serves as the base for Durmitor adventures. Black Lake (Crno Jezero), a stunning glacial lake just 3 km from the town centre, is the most accessible highlight. In summer, Durmitor offers hiking, zip-lining across the canyon, and world-class rafting on the Tara. In winter, it transforms into a ski destination.

The drive

What the road looks like

The route heads southeast from Sarajevo through Trnovo and into the Drina River valley, passing through Foca — a small town with Ottoman heritage on the confluence of the Drina and Cehotina rivers. From Foca, the road follows the Tara River upstream, the canyon deepening as you approach the Montenegrin border.

After crossing into Montenegro at Hum/Scepan Polje, the road climbs through spectacular gorge scenery toward the Tara Bridge. The final section to Zabljak crosses a high plateau with views of Durmitor's peaks. The approach to town passes Black Lake and several trailhead parking areas.
