About this route

Sarajevo to Banja Luka transfer

Banja Luka is Bosnia and Herzegovina's second-largest city and the de facto capital of the Republika Srpska entity. It is a city of tree-lined boulevards, outdoor cafes, and a relaxed lifestyle centred around the Vrbas River, which flows through the centre in a series of rapids and swimming holes. The city has a surprisingly cosmopolitan feel — a thriving food scene, craft beer bars, a growing cultural calendar, and enough parks and green spaces to earn it the nickname "Green City."

The centrepiece is Kastel, a massive stone fortress that has stood on the banks of the Vrbas for over 500 years. Originally Roman, rebuilt by the Ottomans, and expanded by the Austro-Hungarians, Kastel now hosts summer events and concerts within its walls. The Vrbas River itself is the city's playground — locals swim, kayak, and raft through rapids that run right through downtown, an unusual sight in any European city.

The drive from Sarajevo to Banja Luka takes you through some of central Bosnia's finest scenery, passing directly through Travnik (the former Ottoman vizier capital) and near Jajce (home to the famous Pliva Waterfall). This makes it one of the best multi-stop routes we offer — three remarkable destinations in a single journey.

The drive

What the road looks like

The route follows the M-5 highway northwest from Sarajevo through the Bosna River valley, passing Visoko and Zenica before reaching Travnik. This first section takes about 1 hour 25 minutes. After Travnik, the road continues through the Lasva and Vrbas valleys.

If you opt for the Jajce detour, the road branches west from Travnik toward Jajce (70 km), where the Pliva Waterfall and medieval fortress await. From Jajce, the road north to Banja Luka follows the Vrbas River through a stunning gorge — one of the most scenic stretches of road in Bosnia.

The direct route from Travnik to Banja Luka continues northwest on the M-5 through Donji Vakuf and into the Vrbas canyon from the south. Either way, the approach to Banja Luka reveals a modern, spacious city spread along both banks of the Vrbas.
