About this route

Sarajevo to Dubrovnik transfer

The Sarajevo to Dubrovnik private transfer is one of our most popular routes, connecting the cultural heart of Bosnia and Herzegovina with Croatia's crown jewel on the Adriatic coast. At 270 kilometres, this is a journey that deserves more than just getting from A to B — the landscape between these two cities is among the most varied and beautiful in all of southeastern Europe.

What makes this transfer truly special is the option to break the journey with stops at three remarkable places. Mostar's Stari Most bridge, the medieval fortress village of Pocitelj, and the thundering Kravice waterfalls each offer a completely different experience. Together, they transform a four-and-a-half-hour drive into a full day of discovery that rivals any organised tour — but on your own schedule and in the privacy of your own vehicle.

Dubrovnik needs little introduction. The "Pearl of the Adriatic" awaits at the end of this journey with its magnificent city walls, marble-paved Stradun promenade, and Baroque churches glowing gold in the Mediterranean sun. Arriving by private transfer means you step out of the car relaxed and ready to explore, rather than cramped after hours on a bus.

The drive

What the road looks like

The route begins by following the M-17 highway south from Sarajevo, climbing over the Ivan Sedlo pass before descending into the dramatic Neretva River canyon. The road traces the river's emerald course through gorges and past rocky cliffs all the way to Mostar, approximately two hours into the journey.

South of Mostar, the landscape shifts from mountain gorges to the sunbaked Mediterranean. The road passes through the village of Pocitelj, where a cluster of stone buildings and a citadel tower cling to a steep hillside above the Neretva. A short detour from the main road leads to Kravice waterfalls, hidden in a lush green amphitheatre of travertine rock.

Approaching the Croatian border at Metkovic-Doljani, you will need your passport ready. The border crossing is usually straightforward, taking 10-20 minutes depending on the season. In summer, queues can be longer as tourist traffic increases. Once in Croatia, the road follows the Adriatic coastline with spectacular views over the islands of Korcula and Mljet before descending into the walled city of Dubrovnik. Your driver will navigate the often-confusing approach roads and drop you at the nearest point to your accommodation, whether that is in the Old Town, Lapad, or Babin Kuk.

Practical info

What to expect

This transfer involves crossing an international border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. All passengers must carry a valid passport. EU, US, UK, Canadian, and Australian citizens do not require a visa for either country. Your driver will guide you through the border procedure, which typically involves a brief document check from both Bosnian and Croatian border officers.

Pickup is from any address in Sarajevo, with the driver arriving at your door. For the optional stops, your driver will manage parking and wait times. At Kravice waterfalls, there is a small entrance fee (approximately EUR 8 per person in summer) that is not included in the transfer price.

The vehicle is equipped with air conditioning, bottled water, and phone charging cables. Standard luggage allowance is two large suitcases and two carry-on bags. For the Dubrovnik Old Town, where cars cannot enter, your driver will drop you at the Pile Gate or Ploce Gate, both of which are within steps of the pedestrian centre. Luggage transfer assistance to your hotel can be arranged.

Common questions

Sarajevo to Dubrovnik FAQ

Yes, this route crosses the international border between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia. All passengers must carry a valid passport. ID cards are sufficient for citizens of EU member states, but we recommend carrying a passport to avoid any complications.

Typically 10 to 20 minutes outside peak season. During July and August, wait times at the Metkovic-Doljani border can reach 30-45 minutes, particularly on weekends. Your driver knows the crossing patterns and will plan accordingly.

Yes, and we highly recommend it. With all three stops, the total journey time is approximately 6 to 6.5 hours door to door. This is a comfortable pace that gives you meaningful time at each location without rushing. Most of our clients choose this full-stop option.

The route is beautiful year-round, but May to October offers the best weather. Kravice waterfalls are most impressive in spring when water levels are high, while summer allows for swimming. Autumn brings golden colours to the Neretva valley. Winter is quieter at the border but some attractions may have reduced hours.

Cars cannot enter Dubrovnik's pedestrian Old Town. We drop off at Pile Gate or Ploce Gate, both main entrances to the walled city. If your accommodation is in Lapad, Gruz, or Babin Kuk, we will drive you directly to the door. Please share your exact address when booking.

Your luggage stays securely in the vehicle with the driver while you visit Kravice or any other stop. You only need to bring what you want for the visit itself — a camera, swimwear in summer, and comfortable shoes for the short walk down to the falls.
