About this route

Sarajevo to Mostar transfer

The journey from Sarajevo to Mostar is one of the most spectacular drives in the Western Balkans, following the turquoise Neretva River through deep gorges and past forested mountains. This 130-kilometre route connects Bosnia's capital city with its most visited southern town, famous for the iconic Stari Most bridge that arches gracefully over the Neretva.

Travelling by private transfer rather than public bus means you control the pace of the journey. You can stop at the medieval bridge town of Konjic, visit the WWII museum at Jablanica, or simply pause at one of the roadside viewpoints where the Neretva canyon drops away beneath you. The flexibility to explore at your own speed transforms a simple point-to-point journey into a memorable experience.

Mostar itself rewards visitors with its UNESCO-listed Old Town, cobblestone lanes lined with coppersmiths and jewellers, Ottoman-era mosques, and a cafe culture centred around the river. Whether you are spending a night in Mostar or continuing onward to the Adriatic coast, this transfer sets you up perfectly.

The drive

What the road looks like

Departing Sarajevo, the route follows the M-17 highway southwest through the suburb of Ilidza, where the Bosna River springs emerge from beneath Igman mountain. The road climbs through rolling green hills and enters the Ivan Sedlo pass at around 960 metres elevation, where pine forests line both sides of the road and mist often hangs in the valleys below.

After descending from the pass, you reach the Neretva River valley near Konjic. From here, the road hugs the river bank through increasingly dramatic scenery. The Neretva narrows into a steep-walled canyon, its water an extraordinary shade of green-blue that changes with the seasons. Near Jablanica, the valley opens slightly where a large artificial lake was formed by the hydroelectric dam.

South of Jablanica, the canyon tightens again as you pass through short tunnels carved into the rock face. The final approach to Mostar brings you through the sprawling suburbs before the old stone minarets and the gleaming white arc of Stari Most come into view. Your driver will drop you as close to your accommodation as possible, navigating the narrow streets of the Old Town with local expertise.

What to expect

Pickup is from your hotel, apartment, or any address in central Sarajevo. Your driver will confirm the exact pickup time the evening before your transfer. For early morning departures, confirmation may come by SMS or WhatsApp message.

The vehicle is a comfortable, air-conditioned sedan suitable for up to four passengers with standard luggage. For groups of five to seven, a minivan is available at a small supplement. The boot space accommodates two large suitcases and two cabin bags comfortably.

Restroom stops can be arranged at any point along the route — there are several clean rest areas and cafes along the Neretva valley.

Common questions

Sarajevo to Mostar FAQ

The direct drive takes approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes without stops. If you choose to stop at Konjic and Jablanica, allow around 3 hours and 15 minutes total. Your driver will manage timing to ensure you arrive comfortably.

Yes, the M-17 highway is a well-maintained two-lane road and the main artery connecting northern and southern Bosnia. While it has some winding sections through the Neretva canyon, your experienced local driver knows every curve. The road is safe in all seasons.

Absolutely. One of the main advantages of a private transfer is the ability to stop whenever you see a viewpoint worth photographing. The Neretva canyon has several pull-off areas with stunning views, and your driver will happily pause for you.

Konjic is known for its elegant six-arched Ottoman stone bridge over the Neretva, its traditional woodcarving artisans, and a compact old quarter with mosques and cafes. A 30-minute stop gives you time to walk the bridge, take photos, and grab a Bosnian coffee.

Both directions offer the same magnificent scenery. However, driving south from Sarajevo means you descend into the Neretva valley, which many travellers find slightly more dramatic. We offer transfers in both directions at the same price.

Bosnia uses the convertible mark (BAM), and this is accepted everywhere along the route. Euros are widely accepted in Mostar's tourist areas but less so in smaller towns like Konjic and Jablanica. We recommend having some BAM for coffee and snacks at stops.
