About this route

Sarajevo to Konjic transfer

Konjic is a small gem of a town straddling the emerald Neretva River, just 55 minutes south of Sarajevo. It is best known for three things: a beautiful six-arched Ottoman stone bridge that has spanned the Neretva since the 17th century, some of the best whitewater rafting in the Balkans, and the extraordinary D-0 ARK — a top-secret nuclear bunker built for Yugoslav leader Tito during the Cold War, now converted into a contemporary art space.

The town itself is compact, walkable, and refreshingly uncommercialised. Traditional woodcarving workshops still operate in the old quarter, producing the intricate geometric patterns that are a hallmark of Bosnian craft. The riverside cafes offer a perfect setting for a slow Bosnian coffee while watching the Neretva flow beneath the old bridge.

Konjic is also the gateway to some of Bosnia's most dramatic nature. The Neretva canyon stretches south toward Jablanica with towering rock walls, while the Rakitnica gorge — one of the deepest canyons in Europe — lies to the east. For visitors based in Sarajevo, Konjic offers an easy half-day trip or a first stop on a longer journey toward Mostar and the south.

The drive

What the road looks like

The route follows the M-17 highway southwest from Sarajevo through Ilidza and begins climbing toward the Ivan Sedlo mountain pass. The road winds through pine forests and past mountain meadows, reaching an elevation of approximately 960 metres at the pass. On clear days, the views from Ivan Sedlo stretch across multiple mountain ranges.

After the pass, the road descends into the Neretva valley. Konjic appears where the river widens slightly, its stone bridge and minarets visible from the approaching road. Your driver drops you near the old bridge for easy access to the town centre.

Practical info

What to expect

Pickup is from your hotel or any address in Sarajevo. The drive takes approximately 55 minutes on a well-maintained highway. Your driver waits in Konjic while you explore.

Konjic's main sights — the Ottoman bridge, old town, and riverside cafes — are all within a compact walking area. Allow 1.5-2 hours for the town itself. If you visit Tito's Bunker (D-0 ARK), add 45-60 minutes — guided tours run on a schedule and the bunker is approximately 5 km outside town (your driver takes you there).

For Neretva rafting, the season runs from May to October. Rafting trips typically take 3-4 hours and can be booked through local operators. If you plan to raft, let us know at booking so your driver can coordinate timing. This makes for an excellent active day trip combined with sightseeing in town.
