About this route

Sarajevo to Bihac transfer

Bihac is the gateway to Una National Park — one of the most spectacular protected areas in the western Balkans, where the Una River carves through limestone terrain in a continuous series of cascades, waterfalls, rapids, and turquoise pools. The crown jewel is Strbacki Buk, a massive 24-metre travertine waterfall that ranks among the most impressive in southeastern Europe.

The Una River itself is extraordinary. Its water is so clean and clear that you can count pebbles on the riverbed from metres above, and its colour shifts between emerald green and milky turquoise depending on the light and season. Rafting on the Una is considered one of the finest river experiences in Europe — not extreme whitewater, but a magical float through canyon scenery punctuated by small waterfalls and swimming holes.

Bihac is a longer drive from Sarajevo than most of our transfers — approximately 4.5 hours — but the distance is part of what keeps this corner of Bosnia unspoiled. The journey itself passes through remarkable scenery, and with an optional stop in Jajce for the famous waterfall, the drive becomes part of the experience. For nature lovers, the Una River region is simply unmissable.

The drive

What the road looks like

The route heads northwest from Sarajevo on the M-5 highway through the Bosna valley, passing Travnik and optionally stopping in Jajce. From Jajce, the road continues through the Vrbas valley and into the lush hills of the Krajina region in western Bosnia.

The final approach to Bihac follows the Una River, which appears on your left — its famous turquoise colour immediately visible. The road passes through Martin Brod, a village at the confluence of the Una and Unac rivers, before reaching Bihac. The town sits on the Una's banks with a compact, pleasant centre.
