About this route

Sarajevo to Jablanica transfer

Jablanica is a small town on the Neretva River that punches far above its weight in historical significance. It was here in 1943 that Yugoslav Partisans carried out one of the most audacious military operations of World War II — the Battle of the Neretva. Under heavy enemy fire, Partisan forces destroyed the railway bridge over the river to deceive the advancing German, Italian, and Chetnik forces, then secretly rebuilt a temporary crossing to evacuate 4,000 wounded fighters across the swollen river and into the mountains.

The battle became the stuff of legend, later immortalised in the 1969 film "The Battle of Neretva" starring Yul Brynner and Orson Welles. Today, the remains of the destroyed bridge stand exactly where they fell into the gorge, preserved as a memorial alongside an open-air museum featuring tanks, artillery, and a locomotive from the era. The indoor museum tells the story through photographs, maps, and personal artefacts.

Beyond the museum, Jablanica offers stunning natural scenery. The town sits where the Neretva canyon narrows dramatically, flanked by towering rock walls. Jablanica Lake, formed by the hydroelectric dam, creates a striking turquoise reservoir framed by mountains. The combination of history, nature, and the dramatic Neretva canyon scenery makes Jablanica a rewarding half-day trip from Sarajevo.

The drive

What the road looks like

The route follows the M-17 highway southwest from Sarajevo over the Ivan Sedlo mountain pass (960m) — the same scenic road used for the Sarajevo-Mostar transfer. After descending from the pass, you enter the Neretva River valley near Konjic, where the river's extraordinary green colour first appears.

From Konjic, the road follows the Neretva canyon south through increasingly dramatic scenery. The river narrows, the walls steepen, and the water churns through rapids and over boulders. After about 25 km of canyon driving, you arrive at Jablanica where the valley opens slightly around the lake. The museum and bridge remains are signposted on the left bank.

Practical info

What to expect

Pickup is from your hotel or any address in Sarajevo. The drive takes approximately 1 hour 15 minutes on a well-maintained highway. Your driver waits in Jablanica while you visit the museum and explore.

The Battle of the Neretva Museum has a small entrance fee. Allow 45-60 minutes for the indoor museum and outdoor exhibits including the destroyed bridge, military vehicles, and memorial grounds. Photography is permitted throughout.

Jablanica has several restaurants along the Neretva serving traditional Bosnian cuisine, particularly grilled trout from the river. The town is compact and easy to walk.

This route combines perfectly with Konjic (25 km north) for a richer day trip, or as a half-day stop en route to Mostar. The Neretva canyon between Konjic and Jablanica is one of the most scenic stretches of road in all of Bosnia.
