About this route

Sarajevo to Vlasic transfer

Vlasic is one of the largest mountain plateaus in Bosnia and Herzegovina — a vast, gently rolling highland that sits at approximately 1,800 metres, offering panoramic views that stretch across central Bosnia in every direction. The Babanovac resort area near the summit is the main destination, with hotel and apartment accommodation, ski lifts, hiking trails, and the kind of wide-open mountain landscape that feels like the roof of the world.

In winter, Vlasic transforms into a ski resort with reliable snow cover and family-friendly slopes. In summer, the plateau becomes a haven for hiking, mountain biking, and simply breathing in the cool, clean air — a welcome escape from the heat that makes Vlasic particularly popular with Gulf Arab visitors during the summer months. The extensive flat meadows and gentle terrain make it accessible for walkers of all fitness levels, including families with children.

The drive from Sarajevo passes directly through Travnik, the former seat of Ottoman viziers, making this one of the most rewarding route combinations we offer. Explore Travnik's fortress, taste its legendary cevapi, stroll the Plava Voda springs — then continue up the mountain to Vlasic for afternoon hiking and cool mountain breezes. It is the kind of day that reminds you why Bosnia keeps drawing visitors back.

The drive

What the road looks like

The route follows the M-5 highway northwest from Sarajevo through the Bosna River valley, passing through Visoko and Zenica before reaching Travnik at the foot of Vlasic mountain. This first section takes about 1 hour 25 minutes on good roads.

From Travnik, the road begins to climb steeply up Vlasic, winding through dense mixed forest with hairpin turns that reveal increasingly dramatic views. The ascent takes approximately 30-40 minutes. As you emerge above the tree line, the landscape opens into the vast Babanovac plateau, with its hotels, cafes, and seemingly endless alpine meadows.

Practical info

What to expect

Pickup is from your hotel or any address in Sarajevo. The total drive takes approximately 2 hours 10 minutes to Babanovac. Your driver waits on the mountain while you explore.

Vlasic is accessible year-round. In winter (December-March), the road is maintained and cleared, though snow chains or winter tyres are required — our vehicles are equipped for mountain driving. In summer, the road is clear and comfortable.

At Babanovac, there are hotels, restaurants, and cafes. Several restaurants serve traditional Bosnian mountain cuisine — grilled meats, pies, and fresh dairy products from local farms. Prices are very reasonable. For hiking, no special equipment is needed on the plateau trails — comfortable walking shoes are sufficient. The terrain is mostly flat to gently rolling.

Pack warm layers regardless of season — at 1,800 metres, temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler than Sarajevo. Evenings on the plateau can be cold even in July.

Common questions

Sarajevo to Vlasic FAQ

The Babanovac plateau sits at approximately 1,800 metres. The summit of Vlasic reaches 1,943 metres. The plateau feels remarkably flat and expansive for its elevation — more like a high-altitude meadow than a mountain peak.

Yes. Vlasic has ski lifts, reliable winter snow, and family-friendly slopes. It is less developed than Jahorina or Bjelasnica but offers a quieter, more affordable skiing experience. The season typically runs from December to March.

Absolutely — Travnik is directly at the foot of Vlasic and is included as a complimentary stop. Explore Travnik's fortress, Plava Voda springs, and famous cevapi, then continue up to the mountain. A perfect full-day itinerary.

Very much so. The plateau's gentle terrain is ideal for family walks. The mountain air, wide meadows, and open spaces are perfect for children to run and play. The Babanovac area has restaurants and basic facilities.

Hiking across the plateau, mountain biking, horseback riding, paragliding, visiting traditional mountain farms for fresh cheese and cream, and simply enjoying the cool mountain air and panoramic views. The pace of life on Vlasic is deliberately slow.

The climb from Travnik to Babanovac involves steep switchbacks through forest for about 30-40 minutes. The road is paved and maintained. Our drivers navigate this road regularly. Once on the plateau, the road is flat and easy.
