About this route

Sarajevo to Bjelasnica transfer

Bjelasnica is the mountain that hosted men's alpine skiing events at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics, and it remains one of Bosnia and Herzegovina's premier ski destinations. The summit reaches 2,067 metres, making it the highest skiable peak near Sarajevo, with consistently excellent snow conditions and a wilder, more off-piste character than neighbouring Jahorina.

Located just 28 kilometres southwest of Sarajevo's centre, Bjelasnica is remarkably close to the city yet feels genuinely remote. The private transfer takes approximately 40 minutes and climbs from the urban bustle of Sarajevo through the village of Hadzici before ascending into alpine meadows and dense forest. This short distance makes it perfectly feasible to stay in Sarajevo and ski Bjelasnica as a day trip.

In summer, Bjelasnica transforms into a hiking and nature destination. The highland village of Lukomir, perched on the mountain's southern rim at 1,469 metres, is the highest permanently inhabited village in Bosnia and a living museum of traditional stone architecture and pastoral life that has changed little in centuries.

The drive

What the road looks like

The route departs Sarajevo heading southwest through Ilidza, the leafy suburb known for its thermal springs and the tree-lined Velika Aleja promenade. From Ilidza, the road follows the Zeljeznica river valley briefly before turning south toward Hadzici. After Hadzici, the climbing begins in earnest on the R-435 mountain road, which ascends through mixed beech and conifer forest with increasingly dramatic views of the surrounding peaks. The road passes through the small settlement of Babin Dol before reaching the Bjelasnica resort area, where the Olympic Hotel and the base of the ski lifts are located. In winter, this final section is regularly maintained but can require cautious driving during fresh snowfall. The landscape on the upper reaches is stark and beautiful — open alpine meadows framed by rocky ridgelines, with views stretching south toward Visocica and the remote Rakitnica canyon.

Practical info

What to expect

Your driver picks you up from any Sarajevo address, including hotels, apartments, and Sarajevo Airport (SJJ). Ski and snowboard gear travels free of charge — just note the number of equipment sets when booking. Our vehicles run winter tyres from November through April as standard. The drop-off point is at your Bjelasnica hotel or directly at the ski lift base area, whichever you prefer. For those visiting the highland village of Lukomir in summer, please note that the final access road is unpaved and requires a suitable vehicle — mention Lukomir at booking and we will arrange a 4x4 transfer. Return transfers can be booked at a fixed time or on a flexible basis where you message the driver when ready.

Common questions

The drive is approximately 40 minutes for 28 kilometres. Winter conditions with fresh snow may add a few minutes due to slower mountain road speeds.

Bjelasnica has runs for all levels, though it is particularly favoured by intermediate and advanced skiers who enjoy its steeper terrain and off-piste opportunities. Beginners will find suitable slopes near the base area.

Yes. Lukomir is accessible from the Bjelasnica road in summer and early autumn (typically June through October). The final stretch requires a 4x4 vehicle, which we provide when you mention Lukomir at booking. The village is not accessible in winter due to snow.

Jahorina is larger with more groomed pistes and a wider range of hotels and restaurants. Bjelasnica is higher, wilder, and better suited to adventurous skiers who enjoy off-piste terrain and a quieter atmosphere. Both hosted events at the 1984 Olympics.

Absolutely. Igman neighbours Bjelasnica and the two mountains are connected by road. Many visitors combine both in a single outing. Ask about our combined mountain transfer options when booking.

Yes, the road is fully paved from Sarajevo to the Bjelasnica resort complex. Only the secondary track to Lukomir village beyond the resort is unpaved.
