The drive

What the road looks like

The drive from SJJ Airport to central Sarajevo follows the Dzemala Bijedica road, a main artery that runs northeast from the airport towards the city centre. You will pass through the residential neighbourhoods of Butmir and Ilidza before joining the broad Zmaja od Bosne boulevard, known locally as Sniper Alley during the 1990s siege but today a modern, tree-lined avenue flanked by government buildings, shopping centres, and the National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

As you approach the city centre, the road narrows and the Ottoman-era architecture begins to appear. The minarets of the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and the red rooftops of Bascarsija come into view against the backdrop of the surrounding hills. Depending on your hotel location, your driver may take you through the Austro-Hungarian quarter with its grand facades, or directly into the winding streets near the Old Town.

Traffic can be heavy during morning and evening rush hours (roughly 07:30-09:00 and 16:00-18:00), which may add 10-15 minutes to the journey. Outside peak times, the drive is straightforward and quick.
