About this route

Sarajevo to Igman transfer

Mount Igman rises directly southwest of Sarajevo and holds a unique place in both Olympic history and the story of the city itself. The mountain hosted cross-country skiing, biathlon, and ski jumping events during the 1984 Winter Olympics, and during the siege of Sarajevo in the 1990s, the road over Igman served as the city's lifeline — the only route in and out not controlled by besieging forces.

Today, Igman is Sarajevo's most accessible mountain escape. At just 22 kilometres from the city centre, the transfer takes only 30 minutes, making it the quickest route from urban Sarajevo to genuine mountain terrain. The Igman plateau sits at around 1,500 metres and offers a mix of forest walks, cross-country ski trails, and family-friendly sledging areas in winter.

Unlike the steeper alpine terrain of Bjelasnica and Jahorina, Igman's gentler topography makes it ideal for Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, summer hiking, and mountain biking. The renovated Olympic ski jumps at Malo Polje have become a landmark attraction, and the surrounding forests of spruce and beech are among the most pristine near any European capital.

The drive

What the road looks like

The route departs Sarajevo heading southwest through the suburb of Ilidza, passing near the source of the Bosna River at Vrelo Bosne — a popular park with crystal-clear spring pools. From Ilidza, the road climbs steadily through Blazuj and onto the Igman mountain road, which winds through dense mixed forest. This road carries significant historical weight: it was the wartime route over Igman that kept Sarajevo connected to the outside world during the 1992-1995 siege. Today it is a well-maintained asphalt road with moderate switchbacks. The route arrives at the Igman plateau near Veliko Polje, where the Olympic venues, the Hotel Igman, and trailheads for hiking and cross-country skiing are located. The nearby Malo Polje area hosts the restored Olympic ski jumps, visible from the road as striking concrete structures rising above the tree line.
